Election

Proof of a Conditional Doctrine of Election

Under God’s perfect plan the election of the saints is entirely conditional based on man’s free will.
The Purpose of this article is to show where man’s freewill comes into play in the process of coming to God, which is necessary for salvation. It explains the Parable of the Sower using Abraham as an example to accomplish this. It assumes that the good deeds/works and obedience to the law are not what brings a man closer to God.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Before explaining where Free Will exists the things man cannot do with his own Free Will are explained in the first paragraph to help us clearly define man’s limitations.

Gifts/Help from God – Faith, coming to God or seeking God, and repentance
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”(NKJV) So we do not create faith but rather it is given to us by God when we hear the Word of God.) Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God”(NIV) . According to the Bible faith is a gift and God reveals Christ to those he has elected. Many think it appears when reading through the Bible that man has a role in faith after all God calls on men to believe and will punish those who do not believe. Man cannot create faith but he has a responsibility to get that faith. God also calls on men to come to him (through seeking him) and yet they cannot move their hearts one millimeter, because only God can draw a man’s heart to him. John 6:44 says “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day”(NIV). Man is called on to repent and yet he cannot on his own. Man’s work is to come to Jesus and believe in him in John 6:29,“Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” (NIV) There are no good verses in the Bible that give specific information concerning man having a part in creating faith. There are good verses, like the two just mentioned, that support the opposite. As a result honest scholars are left to conclude that all faith is a gift of God.

Where Man’s Freewill exists in the election and coming to God
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We must look at the doctrine of coming to God by faith to understand man’s role. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” This takes place before believing in Jesus. It took Abraham 10 years to come to God before he was saved. Hebrews 11:8 says, “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” (NIV) Abraham was given faith from God but not saving faith. Genesis 22: 17 says, “I will surely bless you( and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring[ all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”(NIV) When Abraham believed this he was saved because he believed that a Savior would come through his offspring. This faith was also a gift from God as is all faith. BUT THE BEEF IS IN THE TEN YEARS OF SEEKING AND COMING TO GOD. THIS IS WHERE THE CONDITION OF SALVATION EXISTS AND FREE WILL IS ALIVE AND WELL. When God planted a Seed of the Word of Truth in Abraham was when he called him out of his native land, Abraham could have rejected that seed at anytime like most sinners do. In his free will he chose not to reject the truth and ended up being given saving faith.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

When a person first receives the word of truth in the Parable of the Sower this is the starting point of seeking the Lord not the point of salvation. Jesus spoke with a man He said was close to the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus did not call on the man to believe at once or to call on the name of the Lord right then. It appears that this man was near salvation but not ready to enter the kingdom on the day he met Jesus in the flesh. Mark 12:32-35 says, “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.” (NIV) The Bible says in Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”. (NIV) This verse proves that faith is involved in the salvation process before saving faith in Jesus occurs. A man must come to Jesus to believe in him. The Parable of the Sower speaks about men coming to Jesus and conditions it on the heart of each man. This parable explains the secrets of the Kingdom of God that only the Elect understand. God plants seeds in the hearts of men. If a man continues to believe the truth he will reap many times what was sown. If men fall away from the truth they will not be saved. The faith was a gift from God but holding on to the truth is left up to man. Most men love lies more than the truth so they cannot keep the truth. When men fall away they accept lies instead of the truth. 2 Thes 2:10b says, “They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (NIV) It is no surprise that men reject the truth because in the past they have already all turned, gone their own way and followed Satan and his lies. The planting of seeds gives man a chance to come back to God. God gives men faith as a gift and enough grace to hold on to that gift but they are not forced to hold onto it. It is up to the will of man to hold onto it. It is clear that God does not take away the seeds of truth from men’s hearts nor does the Bible say He forces any to continue to believe or give them special protection from the devil that others do not have. The men who continue to believe have noble hearts and God will reveal Christ to them. The initial faith in the truth is a gift from God. Some men will preserver with it and some will not. The men who continue to hold on to the faith are still holding on to a faith that is a gift from God and it will never cease to be a gift. Man did not produce the actual faith but he can will to hold on to it. Man’s part is in the perseverance of the faith God has given him not in producing any faith in himself because of his own will. This perseverance is not guaranteed by God like faith in Jesus is after salvation. No one falls away from Jesus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The will of man is the reason some men are saved and others are not. It takes the will of man to persevere with the truth. Salvation is conditional on the heart of man. The grace of God is not irresistible. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance”. (NIV) This verse alone should be enough to disprove an unconditional salvation. God wants all men to come to him and not perish. But God only wills those to come to him whom believe the truth and hold onto it until they come to him and God reveals Jesus to them giving them the gift of saving faith. (I am using the word will here when referring to God’s will not man’s to mean everything that occurs(good or evil) is according to God’s perfect sovereign will. God’s will can also be his commands or what pleases him. You can say the one who obeys God does his will that is not the way I just used the word will.)
Let’s look at other verses that speak about holding on to this word, message or truth that is different from the Gospel. 1 Cor 15:1-2 says” Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.”(NIV) The gospel and the word are two different things here. They had taken their stand on the Gospel but how they stood on the Gospel was not the important thing at this point. Holding on to the word was the most important thing. They will be saved by the Gospel in the future if they continue to seek a true salvation of their souls. The only way God would continue to draw them in is if they continued to hold on to the word. If they hold on to the word they will continue to seek a true salvation of their souls and find it in Jesus.

Why are so few saved?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Matthew 7:13-14 says, 13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.(NIV) Matthew 7:21-23 says, 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’(NIV) So why do so few people go to heaven and so many go to hell? You could say that is because very few continue in the truth. But that is not the best answer. It still leaves the question why do so few continue in the truth? The answer is because on this earth we are all sinners. There are other humans who would not sin when tested like Adam, Eve and all of us. They are born during the Millennium Kingdom. They are not being born during this age. God knows if humans will sin and go their own way before they are born. God is only having sinners born currently. Unlike the angels where God mad all of them and 1/3 of them rebelled against God. Imagine if God had created only the Angels who would rebel first and the Angels who wouldn’t in a different age. That is what he has done with humans. So we are not here randomly. What I mean is that even though we all sin in our own free will God already knew we would and that is why we were born now. Think about it billions of people created by God and we all chose to rebel against him. This is statistically impossible. How could God even create one thousand people without one following God rather than choosing to rebel? So if we consider the fact we all started out in the wrong direction in our own free will it makes the odds of getting us to change much lower. Truly understanding that we are sinners is to know we had to be very evil even to be born during this time period. This helps clear up why so few in this age go to heaven and it now makes more sense why Noah was the only righteous one on earth during his time. Of course I did not need the Bible to clear this up for me I already understood how far I was from God in the past.

Wrong views on being a sinner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Many people hold a false view of what it means to be a sinner. Some think we are sinners primarily because we were born after Adam and Eve. This has some truth to it because we did not start out our lives perfect and then go astray because Adam and Eve did first. But to only look at it this way makes us not look very sinful. After all we got caught up in something that was already started. As a result of this view many people think that they choose between good and evil when they accept Christ or reject Christ. Since they have not wandered off far from God a simple prayer is all they need to do to save them. Seeking God is really not necessary because they were never very far from God. Anyone can get into the Kingdom of God right now and just as they are. This is not true all sinners need a massive change of heart to get into the Kingdom of God and it does take lots of seeking. If not why does the Bible mention seeking God as being so important? It is seek and you shall find not invite Jesus in and you shall find. Many who claim to believe we are all personal sinners also believe all it takes is a simple prayer to get into the Kingdom of God. They act that if you make it any more complicated than that you are hindering people from entering the Kingdom of God. Many people have added things and claim they are necessary for salvation. They range from obeying the law to baptism under water. To encourage people to seek for a true salvation of their souls is not hindering anyone from coming to God because that is how you come to God. Many people that we see being saved in the Bible had already come to God and were ready to enter the Kingdom of God when it was preached to them. We know that the secrets of the parable of the sower had already been given to the disciples so they had already come to God when they met Jesus. Jesus was more concerned with trying to reveal to them that he was in fact the savior rather than trying to get them to seek God like he was when he spoke to the crowds. That is why He appeared to them after He had risen and showed them the holes in his hands. It was not to make them seek him but to show that he was indeed the savior. This is important because if you see someone who has already come to God in the Bible they are ready to accept Christ when they first hear the Gospel. If you read through the Bible it never directs you just to say a prayer to get into the Kingdom of God but rather encourages seeking God.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Another false view of sin is that we are all deserving of hell. They take the verse that speaks about the wages of sin being death and say that this verse proves we are all hell deserving. They claim it means we are all sinners and the wages of our sin is the second death or hell. The verse never says it is referring to the second death. When Adam and Eve sinned they were dead to God they also had die physically. Their relationship with God was dead and when you restore that relationship with God the Bible says you are now alive. Also if the verse is referring to the second death Christ’s work on the Cross was not complete because he still needed to descend into hell and suffer hell for us. Many believe he suffered hell for us this is not true. Just because Christians do not deserve to go to heaven does not mean they deserve to go to hell. It is possible you do not deserve either one. The sins of a forgiven person who goes to heaven deserve what Adam and Eve got in the first curse. They have to get old and die, lost their relationship with God, work became a hardship, pain during childbirth and so on. There is nothing in the Bible to imply their sins deserve anything worse. With hell deserving theology there is little reason to seek a true salvation of your soul. How can you find a true salvation of your soul if you deserve to go to hell? It doesn’t appear to have the possibility of existing after all you deserve to go to hell. Once again to me it seems to take away the attention from seeking truth. Just a little thought from me on some of the wrong theologies about all people being sinners.

*** The reason why men are able to go to heaven and be forgiven is 100% because of Christ’s sacrifice and 0% because of what man has done.
